What is a combi boiler?

Combi Boilers (aka a Combination Boiler) are the most popular type of new boiler gas heating system that gas engineers across not just Scotland but the UK install.

But what is a combi boiler? We thought we would help answer some of the more common questions we get asked about Combi Boilers when we are discussing a new boiler install with a customer.

So what is a Combi Boiler?

It is simple a boiler that combines two functions. Heating the water for your taps and heating the homes central heating system. It means that you no longer need a hot water tank because the hot water produced by a combi boiler is pretty instant.

Is there a benefit to a combi boiler?

More than one benefit. A combi boiler is extremely efficient which means you can lower your monthly energy bills. They are also smaller than older boiler systems so are ideal for sitting in a cupboard in smaller flats where space is vital. And they are cheaper. A combi boiler is a relatively simply engineering system so they are cheaper to buy and cheaper to run as spare parts are less costly as well.

So I don’t need a water tank anymore?

Exactly. A combi boiler is just one unit and covers hot water and radiator heating.

Do combi boilers take longer to install?

The opposite (generally). They are quicker to install because they have less complex fittings and components compared to other boiler heating systems.

What about the water pressure from a combi boiler?

The hot water that arrives at your hot taps is at mains pressure. So no need to worry about having a slow trickle of hot water.

Do combi boilers come in one spec/size?
